Things learnt while travelling 3 months in South America

So after 22 different flights, numerous hours of other transport, 3 continents, and about 45,000 kilometres (enough to go all the way around the World and then some) covered, our trip is finally complete. Long term travelling is definitely an experience as it allows you to see and immerse yourself in so many cultures. Here are the top 5 things i have learned/realised while travelling for 3 months in South America.

1. Australia still is the lucky country. Despite much media attention as to how Australia is declining (and it probably is), we still live in one of the luckiest countries in the World. High wages, a strong dollar and a innate love of travel means we will get to experience things many people never will. So many locals we spoke to in countries have never even travelled across land borders to other countries simply because the middle classes cannot afford to and travel is only for the extremely wealthy.

2. Also tying in with the first point is that Australia is also a foodies heaven compared to a lot of countries. Amazing boutique producers of wine, cheese (King Island from Tas), ham (Red Hog ham from SA), meats and beers (I list some of my favourites here…) that so many countries dont have the luxury of having. Our multiculturalism really comes to the fore in this area.

3. There are so many amazing people out there that you meet while travelling. We met everyone from doctors and lawyers through to bartenders and permanent travellers. Travelling really allows you to build your network of friends across the globe.

4. South America has cultures like no other. Raning from the Incans and Andeans throughout Ecuador, Peru & Bolivia; through to the Gauchos in Argentina and the indigenous tribes in Brazil there is so much to do and see here. Everyone with an interest in other cultures should try to spend some time of their life in South America. And there is always more to discover, it would take a lifetime to see all of this amazing continent.

5. My final realisation is how much i love travelling and want to be able to do more of it, the World is such an amazing place and it would be a shame to only see what 20 odd countries I have in my life so far. This trip has given me a definite motivation to continue to work hard when in Aus and try and acheive some passive income streams to be able to fund further travels later in life.

What have you learned from travelling? And is Australia still the lucky country?
